Why Is There a Brown Ring in My Lawn?
A perfect circle of dead grass does not happen by accident. Nature rarely draws shapes that clean, which is exactly why a brown ring in my lawn is one of the easier problems to narrow down, once you know what to look for.
Three causes account for nearly every ring-shaped pattern in a Fort Wayne lawn, and they call for completely different responses.
Super Green has provided lawn care across Fort Wayne, Indiana for over 10 years. Here is how to tell them apart.
Fungal Disease Is the Most Common Cause
Several turf diseases produce rings as part of how they spread, growing outward from a central point.
Necrotic ring spot creates a distinctive pattern: a ring or arc of dead grass with grass still surviving in the center, sometimes called a frog-eye appearance. Fairy ring, caused by a different fungus entirely, produces a ring of unusually dark green, fast-growing grass, sometimes with mushrooms appearing along the band.
Both spread through the soil, which is why the shape holds so precisely. The fungus moves outward at a consistent rate in all directions from where it started.
What a Brown Ring in My Lawn From a Dog Might Look Like
This one is easy to rule in or out.
Dog urine damage typically shows as a small dead spot ringed by a band of darker, greener grass, the opposite pattern from disease. The nitrogen concentration kills the center while feeding the surrounding grass. These spots are usually a few inches to a foot across, much smaller than a disease ring, and they show up wherever the dog favors going.
If the pattern tracks with where a pet spends time, this is almost certainly the cause.
Fairy Ring Specifically
Worth calling out on its own, because it behaves differently than most lawn problems.
Fairy ring is caused by fungi decomposing buried organic matter in the soil, often an old tree root or construction debris left behind years earlier. The ring can be several feet across and sometimes grows larger year after year as the fungus works its way outward through the buried material.
Mushrooms appearing in a ring pattern, especially after rain, are a strong sign of this specific cause.
Grub Damage Rarely Makes a True Ring
Worth ruling out even though the pattern differs.
Grub damage tends to be irregular rather than circular, and the grass pulls up loose like carpet because the roots are gone. If you can lift the dead patch easily and see grubs underneath, that is a different problem entirely with a different fix.
How to Confirm What You Are Looking At
A few checks narrow it down without guesswork.
Look at the center. Dead in the middle with a green ring around it points toward dog urine. Green or fast-growing in the middle with dead grass forming the ring points toward disease.
Try to lift the grass at the edge of the ring. It pulls up easily with disease and grub damage, and stays rooted with dog spot damage.
Check for mushrooms, especially after rain. Their presence, particularly in a ring shape, strongly suggests fairy ring.
Note the size. Dog spots run inches to a foot. Disease rings can run several feet. Fairy rings can be considerably larger and tend to grow over multiple seasons.
Treating a Brown Ring in My Lawn
The fix depends entirely on the cause identified above.
Dog spots usually recover with watering and time, sometimes helped by reseeding the dead center once the excess nitrogen has washed through.
Fungal disease rings respond to a combination of cultural changes, watering in the morning, improving airflow, adjusting mowing height, and in more severe cases a targeted fungicide application.
Fairy ring is the most stubborn of the three. The buried organic matter driving it is hard to reach without excavation, and results from surface treatment alone are often limited. Aeration through the ring can help water and any treatment reach deeper into the affected soil.
Get an Accurate Read on the Cause
The visual differences above help, but the fastest and most reliable way to know what is causing a specific ring is to have someone look at it in person, ideally with the site’s watering habits and pet activity in mind.
